Top Tips for Cycling the Camel Trail with Children

Exploring the Camel Trail with your children is a fantastic way to soak in Cornwall’s stunning scenery while getting active as a family. This traffic-free route is perfect for little cyclists, but a little planning can turn a good ride into a great one! Here are the top tips to make your adventure smooth and memorable.

1. Choose the Right Route

The Camel Trail is 18 miles long so make sure you choose the best part of the trail for your day.

The Padstow to Wadebridge stretch (5.5 miles one way) is ideal for families—flat, scenic, and manageable for younger riders. If your children have the stamina, extend the journey towards Bodmin, where peaceful woodland trails await. Don't forget you will need to cycle back...

We cycled from Padstow to Wadebridge - had a cafe stop (Beach Box Cafe) for a drink and a bite to eat - and then headed back

2. Rent the Right Bikes

Don’t worry about transporting bikes—local hire shops in Padstow and Wadebridge offer child seats, trailers, and tag-along options to suit all ages. We hired our bikes from Padstow Cycle Hire. We actually managed to fit O's bike in our car with us which was helpful as it meant that he was already comfortable on his bike - he is also only 3.5 and on a very small bike and some bike shops don't have bikes that small - so you need to also bear this in mind. We had O on the bike and M in a trailer - so if O got tired we could pop him (and his bike) in the trailer as well.

3. Timing is Key

Start early in the day to avoid crowds. The mornings are quieter, giving little cyclists more space to ride confidently.

We got to the bike shop as soon as it opened so we could be out on the trail - we certainly noticed the difference in the crowds when we headed back out later in the day.

4. Safety First

Ensure bikes are in good condition, helmets fit properly, and children know instructions (e.g. keep left / keep to the side). A small first-aid kit is never a bad idea for unexpected tumbles.

5. Have a back up plan

Sometimes little legs get tired faster than expected. Have an alternative plan, like stopping earlier or using a taxi or bus to return if needed. We had the trailer (see above) as an option if O got tired.

6. Make Memories

Take plenty of breaks for photos, enjoy the breathtaking views, and most importantly, have fun! The Camel Trail is more than just a ride—it’s an experience your family will treasure.
